Fire Decimates Doc Motor Works On Route 59 In Shorewood

Jun 25, 2023

SHOREWOOD, IL — The Doc Motor Works auto repair service business along Route 59 in Shorewood sustained major damage from a fire that broke out just before dinner time Friday.

Troy Fire Chief Paul Hertzmann said that the fire to the commercial auto repair shop caused approximately $350,000 in damage to the business. A metal pole barn went up in flames around 4:40 p.m.

"We are thankful for all the firemen that came out to serve and help during the circumstances. There were no vehicles damaged in the fire," Doc Motor Works announced on Facebook in the comment thread of Joliet Patch's article. "This was a display service bay that was not in use at the time. No one was hurt, and we are shifting operations to the third building. Operations will resume Monday morning."

Earlier, Hertzmann said it took about 20 minutes for Troy firefighters to get the blaze under control. He said there was a partial collapse of the pole building, so he was not certain how many vehicles were damaged or destroyed in Friday's blaze.

One firefighter from his department was treated on the scene for heat exhaustion.

Hertzmann said there were at least 75 firefighters on the scene putting out the fire, fire crews came from Troy, Joliet, Plainfield, Minooka, Elwood, Channahon, Morris, Wilmington, Romeoville and Lockport Township.

The address of Friday's fire was 18600 Route 59, the fire chief said. The fire also caused damage to a business next door.

"The crews were able to stop the spread from those two suites," Hertzmann said. "The heat was a factor. That's why we wanted to rotate crews there. The cause of it is still under investigation."
